Renewable Energy Engagement Coordinator

The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (CMM) is a Tribal Council located in Mi’kmaki and provides services to the eight Mi’kmaw communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaw communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM’s main office is situated in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community and has over 120 employees. The CMM’s Department of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries Management (DARFM) is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role of the Renewable Energy Engagement Coordinator.

The DARFM is focused on promoting and restoring the concept of Netukulimk in Nova Scotia’s watersheds. Staff members are involved in various marine and freshwater resource management projects. The objective of this work is to ensure that future generations will have access to a healthy environment. The services provided promote youth mentorship and Mi’kmaw capacity building. Key project areas include species-at-risk, marine spatial planning, water quality, commercial fisheries, and habitat restoration.

Reporting to the Ocean Science Manager, the Renewable Energy Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for providing information and building capacity within the CMM’s member Mi’kmaw communities on a variety of subjects related to renewable energy, with a strong focus on offshore wind and/or geothermal energy.

The Renewable Energy Engagement Coordinator will act as an important liaison between the DARFM and Net-Zero Atlantic (NZA). NZA is helping Atlantic Canada move toward a more sustainable energy future by producing credible, objective data to inform sound energy policies and decisions. Focus is on coordinating research and projects that will help to decarbonize the region’s economy, mitigating climate change impacts and moving Atlantic Canada toward net-zero emissions by 2050.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Coordinate knowledge sharing and information exchange between Mi’kmaw communities and NZA project coordinators
  • Act as point of contact for community members interested in learning about renewable energy initiatives.
  • Work with member Mi’kmaw communities and stakeholders to develop relationships for capacity building within Mi’kmaw communities.
  • Organize and participate in meetings, engagement activities, outreach events, and training sessions.
  • Develop outreach materials for the projects.
  • Prepare and produce reports, project updates/briefings, presentations, and provide advice and assistance both orally and in writing to management, NZA, and community partners.
  • Organize research, reference materials, and other related materials in an easily assessable manner.
  • Assist the MCG Advisory Committee and the CMM in the analysis of research or reference materials.
  • Attend periodic meetings and conferences that may be required and/or requested by the Program Manager.
  • Other duties may be required and/or requested by the Ocean Sciences Manager or Senior Director.

Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year of direct experience working in the field of renewable energy, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline (e.g. Environmental Science, Sustainable Energy, Climate Change) OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of research methodologies and standards related to renewable energy.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with various partners (e.g., Indigenous groups, academic, government, NGOs).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and some weekends (if necessary).
  • Proficiency with common office software including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with data analysis and/or statistics.
  • Experience writing proposals and reports.
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle and have a valid driver’s licence.


  • Experience working within/with First Nation communities.
  • Experience developing educational workshops.
  • Experience coordinating meetings or events.
  • Knowledge of current First Nation community challenges and opportunities relating to renewable energy.
  • Understanding of issues related to the gathering and sharing of Mi’kmaq Knowledge systems.
  • Understanding of the Indian Act and Mi’kmaq aboriginal and treaty rights.

Salary/Employment Term:
Salary Range: $50,000-$65,000/year depending on qualifications and experience. This is a Permanent Position (pending successful one-year probationary contract).
