General Description:

Under the direction of the Director of Administration, the Coordinator, Residential Support Program, is responsible for establishing programs for residential school survivors that support their journey of healing. As well, this position coordinates educational programs on the history and intergenerational impact of Indian Residential Schools.


  • Raise awareness by educating individuals on the history and impact Indian residential schools had on its survivors, including those experiencing intergenerational trauma.
  • Coordinate the opportunity for intergenerational survivors (descendants) from Sipeknekatik First Nation to gather and talk about their own personal experiences growing up with Residential School Survivors.
  • Ensure trauma informed programs and services for Intergenerational Survivors are holistic and culturally safe with response plans in place.
  • Coordinate a variety of healing initiatives including, but not limited to: one-on-one counselling sessions (upon request), Sweat Lodges, Pipe Ceremonies, Naming Ceremonies, Healing Ceremonies, Talking and Sharing Circles and Mi’kmaq language mentorship.
  • Set up and coordinate a Steering Committee to develop work plans and training opportunities by engaging with subject matter experts, traditional healers, and knowledge holders.
  • Facilitate healing workshops and cultural activities on a bi-weekly and/or bi-monthly basis.
  • Coordinate sweat lodges, Tipi teachings, sacred teachings and cultural harvesting protocols, etc.
  • Participate and engage in ceremonies with elders, Spiritual Leaders and knowledge keepers.
  • Coordinate community feasts, cultural gatherings and ceremonies.
  • Establish networks with key support systems including health professionals, elders, knowledge keepers, Spiritual leaders.
  • Create a positive and warm environment so community members feel safe and comfortable to express themselves.
  • Research trends, funding opportunities and new ideas for the delivery of services as it pertains to the impact of Indian residential schools.
  • Maintain records of activities, expenditures and budget tracking.
  • Other related duties as determined by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Education:

  • A deep understanding of the impact Indian residential schools has had on the community.
  • A desire to learn and help others in their journey of healing.
  • A deep understanding of the Community’s history, culture, and current needs.
  • Experience organizing programs and activities for large groups.
  • Other related experience and education, in a teaching or healing role, is considered an asset.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours to attend programs during the evenings/weekends.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills are required.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as be self-motivated and reliable.
  • Preference will be given to applicants from a Mi’kmaq First Nations Community.
  • Must have a driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
  • A criminal records check is required. Having a criminal record is not a determinate factor.

Compensation will be based on experience and related training/education.
