About The CMM
The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing eight, Mi’kmaq communities of
mainland NS. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self determination
and enhancement of community. The CMM main office is in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community in
Nova Scotia and has over 120 Employees. The CMM’s Department of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries
Management (DARFM) is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role of
Commercial Fisheries Science Liaison Coordinator.

Position Overview
The Commercial Fisheries Science Liaison Coordinator (CFSLC) will be responsible for attending commercial
Integrated Fisheries Management Plan meetings, fisheries advisory committees, and other fisheries related
meetings and convey updates to member Mi’kmaw communities. The CFSLC will work directly with fisheries
managers to identify their key concerns, report on the outcomes of these meetings and provide insight on the
implications for member communities’ fisheries. The CFSLC is responsible for providing advice to CMM’s member
communities on ongoing commercial fisheries matters and files.

Overview of Responsibilities
 Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual summary progress reports of all CFSLC activities identified within the
current DARFM annual workplan, identifying outstanding items, and plans for resolution.
 Identify any commercial fishery training and/or funding opportunities available to member communities.
 Work collaboratively with the member communities’ fisheries managers, AAROM staff, Atlantic Policy Congress
(APC) of First Nations Chiefs, Mi’kmaw governance organizations, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and
other partners.
 Plan and develop communications material for communities relative to Commercial Fisheries.
 Work directly with Fisheries Managers to identify key concerns, and report on developing issues of interest
related to commercial fisheries.
 Maintain confidentiality of fisheries and business information of member communities.
 Participate in, and report on outcomes of various meetings (Integrated Fisheries Management Plan meetings,
advisory committee meetings, commercial fisheries related meetings, stakeholder industry meetings, etc.).
 Participate in scientific peer review, stock status and science advice meetings.
 Participate as a technical resource in fisheries management or collaborative management initiatives of
AAROM bodies and partnering Mi’kmaw governance organizations.
 Provide support in financial monitoring in accordance with approved budgets and identify new and assessing
current financial resources secured through funding agreements.
 Secure new or continued funding through the preparation of proposals, relative to member communities and
their participation in commercial fisheries.
 Work with the DARFM team to develop research opportunities of direct relevance to member communities and
their participation in commercial fisheries.

Position Requirements
 A minimum of five (5) years of experience in commercial fisheries operations.
 Experience in fisheries management activities and/or education in a related field.
 Knowledge of collaborative resource management, and emerging issues in indigenous resource management
and jurisdiction.
 Ability to work effectively with other departments, levels of government, industry, and the public.
 Experience developing research and/or monitoring proposals related to fisheries or aquatic resource
management.
 Experience working with First Nations bands and communities.
 Knowledge of First Nations cultural, economic, and environmental challenges, especially with respect to
commercial fisheries operations.
 Ability to participate in meetings and understand complex fisheries issues.
 Good understanding of the Indian Act and Mi’kmaq aboriginal and treaty rights.
 Excellent communication, writing and interpersonal skills
 Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, such as Word and Power Point.
 Driver license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel frequently for up to five days if necessary.

Salary/Employment Term:
Salary range: $50,000 to $65,000 per year. This is a Permanent Position (pending successful one-year
probationary contract).
