Title: Manager  

Purpose of position:  

The Manager is responsible for management of the day-to-day operations of the Colchester Historeum and Colchester Historical Society (CHS) in accordance with the policies and directives established or approved by the CHS Board of Directors.

Reporting Relationship: The Manager reports to the President of the Board of Directors.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:

The Manager should have appropriate education in the areas of museology, communications, business administration, or equivalents. The Manager will be a self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize a wide range of varied tasks. They must be a life-long learner who is enthusiastic about strengthening existing or acquiring new skills. The Manager will be a motivated individual who possesses excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Willingness to develop and nurture strong relationships with members, donors, and stakeholders locally, provincially, and nationally is also paramount. It is an asset to have experience working in museum operations or for a not-for-profit organization. A proven track record of successful grant writing is also an asset.


Within the limits of approved programs, objectives and policies established or approved by  the Board, the Manager is responsible for and has the authority to fulfil the responsibilities set forth below. The Manager may delegate to members of staff appropriate portions of responsibility together with the proportionate authority for their fulfilment, but may not delegate or relinquish neither overall responsibility for results nor any portion of accountability.

Strategic Management: 

The Manager will:

  • Plan, direct, coordinate and supervise all phases of the organization’s daily operations, programs.
  • Ensure effective, efficient and timely implementation and administration of programs and policies.
  • Identify challenges and recommend to the Board new or improved procedures, practices and policies when considered appropriate.
  • Coordinate and maintain high standards of cooperation with members of staff, the Directors, volunteers and other agencies or groups within and beyond the community.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement policies pertinent to the safety, security and maintenance of CHS collections and facilities, buildings and property.
  • Develop and deliver budget plans in collaboration with the Finance Committee and Treasurer.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical and legal standards as defined by the Canadian

Revenue Agency, Canadian Museums Association, and Association of Canadian Archivists.

  • Develop partnerships with other organizations, schools, individual donors, the business community and government.
  • Advocate on behalf of the CHS and Historeum to various levels of government, Municipal, Provincial, and Federal.

Board Development  The Manager will:

  • Keep the CHS President informed on a regular and timely basis on all matters concerning the organization.
  • Participate in Board meetings and report regularly to the Board President and Board members regarding operations and activities.
  • Provide direction and continuity to the Board and Committee Chairs and assist them in completing their duties.
  • Research issues and challenges; develop options and provide recommendations to the Board.


Revenue Generation & Fund Development:  

The Manager will:

  • Implement the CHS Fund Development Strategy.
  • Research and take advantage as appropriate of available grants from government, corporate, private sources.
  • Develop and implement multi-year strategic plans for grant applications and fund development working closely with other staff to determine areas of most need.
  • Identify and maintain a roster of prospective donors to be reviewed quarterly.
  • Foster and nurture positive relationships with donors and sponsors.
  • Establish annual goals for Fund Development.
  • Plan annual media reception.

Community Engagement & Public Relations: 

The Manager will:

  • Promote strong public relations, publicize CHS activities by dealing with media agencies, arranging for interviews with the press, photos, preparing press releases and other promotional material.
  • Arrange for presentations as required to the public, special groups and schools, seeking out opportunities to explain the Society’s work and the facilities available.
  • Act as a liaison between the CHS and external stakeholders.
  • Represents the CHS local, regional, provincial, and national related organizations.

Human Resources: 

The Manager will:

  • Be responsible for all staff personnel, such as full-time staff, part-time staff, contract staff and volunteers.
  • Be responsible for the recruiting, hiring, retention, training, and supervision all full-time staff, part-time staff, contract staff and volunteers.
  • Recommend any changes to the structure or staff complement for the organization.
  • Assign functions to various staff members and volunteers and define their relationships to one another.
  • Approve vacations, sick leave and special leave for Historeum staff in accordance with the CHS Personnel Policy.

Time Commitment: 35 hours per week.

Rate of Pay: salary $37,500
