Title: Collections Assistant

Responsibilities:

The Collections Assistant will be responsible for cataloguing, accessioning, and photographing a portion (approximately 400-500) of artifacts awaiting processing. The Collections Assistant will complete all object documentation, apply accession numbers, and create new records on the Collective Access database. The Collections Assistant will house the artifacts to ensure maximum efficiency in artifact storage and assign new permanent locations in the online database. Working directly with the Curator, the Collections Assistant will be trained in collections management, data entry, and pertinent museum administration skills.

The pay for this position will be $15.50 per hour.

Qualifications:

All applicants must:

  • be registered in the Young Canada Works online candidate inventory (www.youngcanadaworks.gc.ca) and meet the eligibility criteria of the Young Canada Works internship program.
  • be a recent graduate with a degree or college certificate or diploma in History, Art History, Canadian Studies, Museum Studies or a related field
  • have data entry experience
  • have strong communication and organizational skills
  • have strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail)
  • be fluent in English
  • possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team

The following are considered assets to this position

  • Knowledge of best practices in collections management
  • Experience handling artifacts
  • Knowledge of Nova Scotia history

Physical requirements include standing, walking, crouching, moving around for extended periods of time, exposure to dust, lifting artifacts (no greater than 10 kgs), and the use of common cleaning fluids and ink.

Offer of employment is conditional upon the completion of all applicable background checks and confirmation of credentials, the results of which must be satisfactory to the employer or will result in termination of your employment. Salary Range: $15.50/ hour for a 35-hour week plus 4% vacation pay

Period of Employment: 20 weeks

Start date: November 22, 2021

End date: March 31, 2022

This position is funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program, and all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria. An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
  • are unemployed or underemployed;
  • are a college or university graduate; and
  • are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program.

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.
