Accountant / Financial Controller

Nestled at the foot of Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia, Cheticamp Co-op is a diversified retail business providing its member owners & customers with food, hardware and building supplies.  Our co-operative has been serving our community since 1937. It has an impressive growth record and an annual sales volume of approximately $15 million.

Role Description

The role of the Accountant / Financial Controller is to oversee the financial operations of the business.  This role reports to the General Manager and is responsible for the entire accounting and office management of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversight of daily financial operations
  • Assist in business development, planning & budgeting
  • Preparation of Financial Statements
  • Training, evaluating and supervising our office team consisting of an Accounts Payable Clerk, Accounts Receivable Clerk and File Maintenance Clerk
  • Execute Payroll and Employee Benefits Programs
  • Monitor financial policies, practices, and procedures of the operation including determining and implementing internal controls policies
  • Financial Aspects of Inventory Control
  • Financial Maintenance of Memberships
  • Bank Reconciliation
  • Cash Flow Management
  • Audit Preparation
  • Government Reporting (GST)
  • Permit Application (Food Vendor Permit, Tobacco Permit, Lottery Permit, etc)
  • Other duties as required by General Manager

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Degree in Accounting, Commerce or other related field (required)
  • CPA designation or working towards a CPA designation (preferred)
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Work a flexible schedule (including mornings, evenings and weekends) Able to work in a fast paced environment


English – Advanced level written and spoken required

French – French written and spoken skills will be considered an asset


Salary: Competitive based on credentials and experience
