Student Coordinator for Sexual Assault Bystander Program

Background

The Bystander Program is being developed to help teach students and faculty/staff about a wide range of sexually violent scenarios that occur on university campuses. The training consists of various modules that teach participants various techniques to confidently intervene as a bystander. These modules include learning how to prevent and de-escalate situations and how to maintain individual safety and the safety of those around them. This program will help to engage the community and alter the social norms surrounding sexual violence. The successful candidate will be responsible for the organization and implementation of the Bystander Program Training on campus. The incumbent will be responsible for working collaboratively alongside Cape Breton University’s Human Rights and Diversity Officer, train next level students on the program content, and facilitate training delivery. The chosen individual will offer ideas and input from a student perspective to help shape the program design.

 Required Skills:

  • Current Student at Cape Breton University
  • Knowledge and understanding of:
    • Cape Breton University’s Sexual Violence Policy & Guidelines.
    • Sexual Violence + trends on prevention and awareness.
  • Ability to discuss and present trauma provoking topics in an effective and empathetic manner.
  • Excellent presentation skills and experience in group facilitation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various groups of individuals (working relationships, student groups, etc.)
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational, administrative and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and be accountable.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in order to share ideas and obtain feedback.
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Flexible at organizing and maintaining various schedules among volunteers.
  • Knowledge and experience in creating and maintaining various social media platforms.
  • Ability to design and distribute creative posters and training media
  • Passionate in making a positive change for all individuals on campus while compassion to those who have experienced these traumas.
  • Proficiency with various software applications (E.g. Microsoft office programs – Word, Excel, Power point, etc.) for communication and development of program related products, campaign posters, and data collection.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver training program to various groups of individuals for the Bystander Program.
  • Represent the student perspective throughout the collaborative development process with new and relevant ideas.
  • Research related topics for development and implementation of the program for students and faculty members.
  • Develop, organize, and communicate training sessions/schedules across diverse groups of individuals on campus.
  • Develop and distribute resources that are relevant to higher education and goals of the program.
  • Evaluate and communicate program progress.
  • Lead and train a group of individuals who will assist in the administration process.
  • Conduct social media campaigns for the program. (E.g. prevention and awareness)
  • Assist in reviewing Sexual Violence policy & guidelines and recommend amendments if/when necessary.

 Application Details

The successful candidate will report to Scott Thomas, Human Rights and Diversity officer. The successful candidate will be expected to work 10 hours per week with flexibility through the school year. Peak times exist in September and January with incoming students which may require more time and flexibility.
