TEACHING ASSISTANT- School of Nursing – NRSG 2101

Position Title: Teaching Assistant

Hours Per Week: 10-15 hours/ week for 9 weeks

Course(s) Supported: Fall Semester 2024: NRSG 2101 – Professional Formation I (3 sections – 3AF, 3BF, and 3CF)

NRSG 2101 Course Description: This course is an introductory nursing course designed to assist students in developing a professional identity as a Registered Nurse (RN).

Teaching Assistant Duties

  • Respond to student inquiries and manage student communication via Moodle and email;
  • Communicate with students via email and Moodle re: group presentation assignments (e.g., sign up, plans, slides, self-evaluation) and support them with uploading documents to Moodle and MS Teams;
  • Review and grade student assignments and provide written feedback for student work (e.g., exams, group presentations, weekly reflections, reading notes) based on predefined criteria;
  • Upload grades and assessment review outcomes to Moodle;
  • Review resources relevant to course content and assignments;
  • Invigilate in-person exams (2 exams – October and December);
  • Attend virtual meetings with course professor (e.g., orientation to NRSG 2101 course and TA role, marking meetings, and as per supervisor request meetings);
  • Participate in other teaching activities and planning aligned with course objectives.

Notes:

While classes are held September 4 to October 30, 2024, meetings with the instructor, student communication, marking, and exam invigilation will take place throughout the term of the appointment, Sept. 4 to Dec. 20 2024.

Except for exam invigilation, all activities can be performed virtually via email, Moodle, or MS. Teams.

Qualifications

Master or PhD level nursing student, active RN practicing in NS, or senior nursing student enrolled in the BScN program at Cape Breton University.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Interest in teaching, mentoring, and working with nursing students.
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Current clinical nursing expertise and knowledgeable about the following course relevant topics: professionalism, NSCN standards of practice, clinical judgement, interprofessional and therapeutic communication, patient-centered care, health equity, the social determinants of health, nursing ethics, and leadership.
