GENERAL FARM HELPER

Our farm, 100-acres of pasture, meadow, and woods, is nestled in the Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere and
overlooks the beautiful Bras d’Or Lake. Although not organic, we aim

to farm as earth friendly as possible. We grow some of our own food, eat locally, compost and
recycle and we avoid the use of commercial pesticides and herbicides.

We have a Percheron Draft horse team, two llamas, and Cotswold sheep (a rare breed) but we are
focused on raising rare and heritage breed turkeys and chickens. In addition, we are developing a
Cut Flower business.

Duties Include, but are not limited to:

1. Gardening

  • a. Weeding, harvesting, planting of the small vegetable and cut flower garden.
  • b. Maintaining the various flower beds around the property.
  • c. Lawn mowing and trimming.

2. Livestock

  • a. Help with care of the livestock. This may include cleaning stalls, feeding, watering,
    gathering eggs, grooming the horses.
  • b. Aid with fence repair, maintenance, construction, etc.
  • c. Assist with general maintenance of farm buildings and equipment
  • d. Assist with the hay-making – loading and unloading the wagon, etc.

3. Bed and Breakfast

  • a. Assist with any outdoor projects around the house and grounds.

4. Walking Trails

  • a. Assist with maintenance, clearing, and building the trails.
  • b. Make any necessary signage (ie directional arrows, etc.) that may be required. Additional
    Information:

This is primarily outdoor work. You will need appropriate workwear, sunscreen, and bug
jackets.  You will have limited access to the house. Covid_19 precautions will be in place.

Must not be allergic to hay or animals.  Must be able to work Sunday (Friday and Saturday off)

• Basic construction skills an asset but not a requirement

• Must be comfortable around dogs and cats.

• Willingness to learn.

• Ability to follow instructions. You may be doing some tasks on your own.

• Must qualify for the Canada Summer Jobs Program

To be eligible, youth must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.

**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
