Communications & Event Assistant: United Way Cape Breton

PURPOSE:
The person in this position is responsible to help build and maintain relationships with organizations and volunteers; identifying key messages and communicating them to potential community partners and stakeholders; monitoring media coverage and managing and creating content for all social media channels. This position is heavily special-event focused, including fundraising and awareness events.
TASKS/DUTIES
Website/Social Media – Write for the external website. Responsible for website and social media updates, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
Media Relations – Research and write press releases and backgrounders. Manage the media list
Writing and editing – Researching, writing and editing of communications materials such as speeches, letters andfeature stories
Special Events – Provide support for events, including United Way Cape Breton’s biggest annual fundraisingevent: Winter Gala. Event duties include: collateral development, planning and on-site participation
Media Monitoring – Identify, monitor and gather information and issues
Research – General information requests and update the database
Work, in assistance, with UWCB staff & other non-profits on community impact and community investmentprojects
Campaign- data entry, picking up of campaign packages, helping develop promotional pieces, volunteerappreciation, etc.
Effectively convey the mission, benefits and organizational values of United Way Cape Breton to general public,businesses, community leaders and all internal and external United Way Cape Breton constituents
Promote a cooperative spirit among coworkers and other partners
Other duties as assigned by Campaign Manager/Executive DirectorSKILLS & ABILITIES

Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently (displays willingness to work with small team)
Able to handle multiple tasks in a highly active and fast-paced work environment
Self-motivated
Strong work ethic
Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are essential
Excellent written, verbal, organizational, interpersonal and presentation and facilitation skills
Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations to diverse groups of individuals including topmanagement, public groups and employee groups
Interacts well with others and is able to maintain positive relationships throughout the community with diversegroups of people and with a wide variety of work environments
Demonstrates abilities in the following areas: analyzing data and providing recommendations from analysis,troubleshooting, sensitivity, diplomacy and discretion with personal and corporate information
Strong competency in Microsoft Office software
Graphic design skills considered to be an asset
Utilizes creative relationship-focused service skills to achieve desired results
Must be willing to travel – this position requires regular offsite appointments
Ability to be flexible and to function well under pressure, meet multiple deadlines
Commitment to community improvement is a must
Some evening and weekend hours required
A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required
