Residence and Accommodations

Make CBU Your Second Home

Cape Breton is a friendly, safe and community-oriented place and the campus at CBU is just as welcoming. Students are encouraged to live on campus, especially during their first year, because it is a great way to meet new friends from all over the world. You will be happy to know that all first-year students are guaranteed a room in residence!

We have 570 rooms available in four different residence buildings with a wide range of living arrangements to choose from: traditional, double room dorms; single rooms; suites; super, single rooms and apartment- style units.

  • MacDonald Residence is a traditional, co-ed dormitory. It has single rooms and double occupancy rooms with two beds, two closets and a sink. There are shared washrooms, showers and laundry facilities on each floor.
  • Cabot Residence is an apartment-style dorm. Each apartment has four private bedrooms and two bathrooms built around a shared living room area and kitchen.
  • Alumni Hall offers traditional dorm rooms and trendy apartment-style living spaces. It has 35 two-bed dorm rooms and 24, five-bedroom apartment units that include shared lounge spaces and laundry facilities on each floor.
  • Harriss Hall is a co-ed residence reserved for students in their second year or higher and offers single, private rooms with a mix of private and shared washroom facilities. This is also where you’ll find our 300-seat dining hall and central mailroom.

Find the residence application here. Once the application has been completed it will be processed within a day or 2 of us receiving the application and at that time further instruction will be provided.

Living Off-Campus

Some students prefer to live off-campus. Safe, affordable and welcoming communities surround CBU, so you will have lots of options when choosing your new home.

Sydney, Cape Breton Island’s largest city, is only 10 kilometres from campus and offers a full range of urban amenities. You will find a downtown shopping district, a shopping centre, restaurants, theatres, a vibrant music culture, public parks and much more.

Glace Bay and New Waterford are both neighbouring towns located just over 10 kilometres from CBU and offer all the amenities you would expect from a small town. Both communities are friendly, inviting and rich in cultural history.

There are many other towns and communities surrounding CBU, including Sydney River, Dominion, North Sydney and Sydney Mines, and you can get anywhere on Cape Breton Island by car within two hours. Public transportation is available to and from CBU to these communities.

It’s Easy to Get Here

The J.A. Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport (YQY) is only a five-minute drive from CBU, so whether you are flying in or flying out, the airport is just around the corner. Traveling to Toronto is also easy, with frequent flight connections between the Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) and the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).
