Cape Breton Experiences

If you don’t need to race away consider extending your stay into the weekend and take advantage of the fall colours and outdoor experiences Cape Breton Island is famous for. Many of these you can organize on your own but we will also have sign up forms available during registration on Thursday.

  1. Celtic Colours festival

Although the Celtic Colours is an international music festival that takes place across Cape Breton Island you might want to consider booking a show in the Sydney area or adding a visit to another community to take in a performance.   1. Visit the Cabot trail

  1. Take a step back in time at Fortress Louisburg

Louisburg is located within 30 minutes’ drive of Sydney and the towns fortress established in 1713 now showcases the life and times of the French colonists who maintained the post for more than three decades. Visitors are able to observe traditional life in the fortress, learn about the history of this important site as well as have an opportunity for Fortress Rum tasting which is aged on site.  From the same location you can also a hike to the site of the first Lighthouse in Canada (1734) across the harbor from the Fortress.   1. Sailing on the Bras d’Or Lakes

October 15th a half-day field trip, includes: 2-hour sailing trip on the world famous Bras d’Or Lakes, see Alexander Graham Bell’s museum. Price includes all transportation. Minimum 15 participants- Maximum 40 participants. Bookings for this will take place at the registration desk on October 13th only.

  1. Mi’kmaq Cultural Experience

October 15th a full-day field trip may include: a visit to the Membertou Heritage Park, traditional foods, a sweat, hikes on local trails – exact details yet to be confirmed. Price includes all transportation. Bookings for this will take place at the registration desk on October 13th only.

  1. Coal Town Tour

October 16th a full-day field trip, includes: joining Glace Bay native Wayne McKay on the transit bus for a trip to one of Cape Breton’s former coal mining towns.  On our tour of Glace Bay, we will travel through some of the old mining neighbourhoods and walk to the Cape Breton Miners Museum where we will take a tour of an underground coal mine.  We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant.  If weather permits, we may have a pit stop at Dominion Beach for a dip in the Atlantic Ocean. Bookings for this will take place at the registration desk on October 13th only.
