We want to make sure your first week on campus as a CBU student is one to remember! Week of Welcome (WOW) provides your first glimpse into university life. It’s an entire week filled with exciting events, fun activities and ways for you, and many other students in your shoes, to step out of your comfort zone and grab university by the horns. If you are undecided on whether or not to attend WOW, we’ve created a blog to tell you why you should!
Meet New People
Like jumping into any new experience, starting university can bring feelings of nervousness, excitement or a combination of the pair, and that’s okay. Take comfort in knowing that almost everyone is in the same boat as you. CBU is home to students from nearly 40 different countries, and at WOW you will be able to immerse yourself in a sea of new people from around the globe, literally. Take a moment to think about your first day of university, walking into class and already seeing the familiar faces of those you met by participating in WOW. We bet you’re a little less nervous already!
‘Week of Welcome is one of the most beneficial opportunities a student can take part in. Not only do you get to meet incredible people who help make this week successful, but you get the opportunity to meet so many students who are going through the same mixture of emotions that you are.” – Aaron Kenny, Bachelor of Arts Student & Peer Success Coach
Become Familiar with Campus
No one wants to arrive ten minutes late on their first day of university just because they couldn’t find their classroom. An added bonus about WOW activities is that they take place all over campus. So, you’ll become familiar with your surroundings in no time. You will have the chance to participate in activities at the Sullivan Field House, the Pit, the Courtyard and many more places on campus. There will also be some down time during WOW where you can explore campus on your own. Don’t be nervous to grab a few of your new friends and wander through the halls to locate your classes and discover some of our hidden gems.
Gain New Experiences
Starting university brings a whole slew of new experiences, and here at CBU we pride ourselves on our diverse campus life. We encourage you to get out there and try new things! Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation, join in on a dance party, attend a Mi’kmaw ceremony or join the CBU Orange Army. Embrace the unfamiliar and step outside your comfort zone.
Ease the Transition of Starting University
Whether you are a student direct from high school, transfer student or mature student attending university for the first time, we want to ensure that your transition to university life is flawless. Aside from fun activities like the paint battle and beach party (just to name a few), we also want you to learn about the support services available to you that will help you succeed during your studies. Events such as School Orientation and the Peer Success Coach Social are examples of opportunities to meet with faculty, students and staff, and learn about what you can expect during your first week of classes, throughout the semester and over the course of your first year as a university student. Learn about our free academic support services such as the Jennifer Keeping Centre and the Math & Science Centre and much more by attending WOW events.
“Week of Welcome can help you make a smooth transition into university life. Attending Week of Welcome events will make you feel more comfortable and confident before classes begin.” – Madeline Campbell, Bachelor of Science Student & First-Year Advising Centre Employee
Trust us when we say it’s important to get involved in events that are happening on campus – not just during WOW, but throughout the entire school year. Keep in mind that university isn’t just about academics. It’s also about the social experience. There’s always room to have fun!
“Your university experience isn’t just created within the classroom. Getting involved on campus helps you make new friends and memories. WOW is a great place to start!” – Katelyn McPherson, Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Business Administration Student & First-Year Advising Centre Employee
Week of Welcome will take place August 31 – September 8, 2019. Find the full schedule here.
