Alexander Graham Bell is most famous for inventing the telephone. But do you know that he loved Cape Breton? Like, really loved it. He was once quoted as saying, “I have travelled around the globe. I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes, the Alps and the Highlands of Scotland, but for simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all.” Cue the awwwwwws.
Did you know that Mabel was equally as awesome? She formed the Young Ladies Club of Baddeck in 1891. Now the Alexander Graham Bell Club, it is the oldest continuously operated women’s organization in Canada. That’s pretty cool.
Because the Village of Baddeck loves the Bells as much as they loved the Cape, on Baddeck’s 100th birthday a bronzed statue of the famous couple was unveiled on the Boardwalk. It was a gift from Aliant and Bell Canada and was created by Halifax sculptor Peter Bustin. Try topping that for a gift!
Head to the Baddeck Boardwalk and meet the Bells. Pose for a pic with the super couple and marvel in the fact that this man is the whole reason you have that smart phone in your hand. Is your mind blown?
