Next week in Dartmouth, Mary Beth Doucette and I will be attending AAEDIRP's Research Workshop "What does it mean to collaborate and build capacity?" A two-day event (February 6-7), it will feature presentations and panel discussions on a number of topics relevant to Aboriginal economic development in the Atlantic provinces, including anti-poverty through community economic development, First Nations fisheries, and land management.
Mary Beth and I will focus our presentation on tourism and culture, particularly looking at community and Elder involvement in tourism initiatives, as well as capacity building for and through tourism development. While Mary Beth will present the experience in Membertou, I will point to other initiatives across Canada highlighting trends and noting how particular strategies for presenting culture may lead to the capacity development of tourists.
Lots of ideas floating around that just need to be nailed down in a powerpoint presentation.
