The week of the 22nd of October sees Cape Breton at the centre of conferences, discussions and roundtables on the topic of Aboriginal Economic Development. The week begins with 400 Economic Development Officers at Membertou and then a dozen or so Aboriginal university students from across the country converge on CBU to discuss issues affecting them in their pursuit of an education and then culminate with a SSHRC National Roundtable with academics and practitioners looking at best practices in partnerships. The Membertou and Unama’ki successes will be showcased for the country as we each learn from other’s successes. If we can predict from past roundtables, the students will be open and frank and some of us will hear things that make us uncomfortable, but reality is reality. If their contributions, an any small way, change attitudes or remove even one barrier, the sessions will be a success.
