When Maureen Barrington chose to attend CBU she based that choice on geography and programming. CBU was the local university, so it was close to home, and it offered the hospitality program that she was interested in. She had no idea that by making this choice she would gain so much more.
As a first year student, Maureen decided to partake in Frosh Week activities to get to know other new students and to have some fun. “The thing I remember the most is when I went to the Pitt for the very first time during Frosh week,” said Maureen. “It was there that I met Michael MacDonald, before we even started classes. I didn’t know it yet, but I had just met my best friend and future husband.”
Maureen graduated with her Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management degree (’01) and then her Bachelor of Business Administration degree (’03) and went on to work as the catering manager for the Delta Sydney, eventually becoming Sales Manager. “In both of these positions I used the skills that I learned while obtaining my degrees,” noted Maureen. “The faculty and staff at CBU were amazing and I learned so much, both in and out of the classroom.”
Today, Maureen and Michael still live in Sydney, and they’ve added two beautiful daughters to their family. Maureen has gone on to become an entrepreneur by starting a gift basket and event decorating company, Brookside Baskets and Decor. Maureen reflects, “CBU was, and still is, such an important part of my education, of our community, and of course, my family.”
