CBU Doctor of Letters honoris causa ’13

When asked if he would accept the nomination for an honorary doctorate of laws degree from CBU, Dr. Andrew Lynk was humbled and excited to deepen his roots with the CBU family. And CBU is so lucky to be able to call him one of its own.

Dr. Lynk received his Medical degree from the Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine, a Rhodes Scholar; he also attended Balliol College, Oxford University, as well as the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Lynk’s passion and medical specialty is Pediatrics.  He is currently the Associate Vice- President of Medicine with the Cape Breton District Health Authority. He has written numerous scholarly papers and has more than two dozen publications to his credit.

Dr. Lynk is the President of the Canadian Paediatric Society.  He has won the Excellence in Leadership Award from Cancer Care Nova Scotia, the Canadian Paediatric Society Distinguished Canadian Community Pediatrician Award, the Cape Breton District Health Authority Healthcare Provider of the Year Award, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Atlantic Region) Specialist of the Year Award.

He was the founding medical director of the Cape Breton District Health Authority high school based Youth Health Centres and was also Chair of the Medical Staff Lobby Group for a smoke free CBRM. In addition to these activities, Dr. Lynk has coached soccer, minor hockey and girls and boys basketball. Additionally, he spent four years as an elected representative on the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board and since 2007, has been a founding member of the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex Board.

Dr. Lynk notes, “A hundred years ago, people came here from all over the world to mine coal and make steel. Now they come from near and far to attend CBU and sharpen their minds and sense of civic responsibility. For me, CBU stands for energy, enthusiasm and an opportunity for students to deepen and challenge how they think about the world. To make a difference. To make the world a better place. I’m a proud Alumnus and Cape Bretoner who knows that CBU is one of Canada’s treasures.”
