The Shannon School of Business (SSOB) is committed to developing students who are well equipped to enter and succeed in the fast-paced business world. The School has successfully prepared its students to enter into the ASCA program as demonstrated by the number of SSOB graduates who hold CA designations.
“Obtaining my Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting at CBU has allowed me to pursue my career goal of becoming a Chartered Accountant. My accounting degree prepared me to conquer the UFE, which is one of the most challenging professional exams and the final academic hurdle to become a Chartered Accountant.”
– Katie Brewer, BBA ’10
Laura Martin graduated from CBU with her Bachelor in Business Administration, Major in Accounting in 2007. She remembers her time at CBU as a great experience, noting the feeling of community on campus. “The small class sizes allowed for much personal attention, which in turn helps students excel,” she says. Like George Unsworth, Laura believes in giving back to her community, and she continues to support CBU by being a member of the CBU Alumni Association’s Board of Directors. After graduating from CBU, Laura went on to the Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy. “My accounting degree obtained through CBU gave me the proper foundation to pursue and obtain my designation as a chartered accountant,” she says. Laura now works as a Senior Accountant at Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants in Sydney, N.S.
“My BBA degree from CBU prepared me to successfully become a Chartered Accountant (CA) – without having to leave my local community. The class sizes at CBU are small and the professors are approachable. The success rate students have in the CA program is a credit to the CBU accounting program and is one of the reasons why at MGM we hire CBU accounting grads, because we know the quality of education they have received.”
– Sonny MacDougall, Partner, MGM & Associates
Brendon Ferguson obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration with a Major in Accounting and Legal Studies in 2008. He loved his experience at CBU, where he was challenged by his professors and was involved with the Students’ Union. Small class sizes allowed him to meet friends who are now fellow business contacts. “CBU provides an environment that encourages students to get involved both inside and outside the classroom. The faculty at the Shannon School of Business takes a genuine interest in the success of their students during the entire program,” he says. Brendon recently completed the CA program and will receive his designation in the near future. Although the program was challenging, he felt well prepared with his degree from CBU. “There is no doubt that the technical and social skills I gained through the CBU accounting program were integral to successfully completing the CA program,” he says. Brendon enjoys being part of the community, and gives back by participating in events such as Relay for Life, Run for the Cure and Movember, when he grows moustache each November to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer. Brendon is currently a senior accountant at KPMG LLP in Halifax, and says his employer puts significant focus on community involvement. He applauds the Shannon School of Business for their commitment in shaping the business leaders of tomorrow. “I think that the interactive teaching approach and ability to get involved at CBU provided me with the confidence I needed to get a career I enjoy and continue to grow as a business person.”
