Professor John Reid from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax with present the 19th annual  J.B. McLachlan Memorial lecture on November 23rd at 7:30 pm at the Old Bank Building on Charlotte Street in Sydney.  This year’s talk is being co-sponsored by the Old Sydney Society.

A Scottish immigrant and coal miner who arrived in Cape Breton in 1902, J.B. McLachlan lead District 26 of the United Mine Workers of America; a dedicated radical, journalist, and union organizer, McLachlan died in 1937.

Held to coincide with the awarding of the McLachlan scholarship, the annual lecture provides an opportunity to reflect on organized labour’s rich past and its present struggles. Past speakers have included David Frank, Nancy Riche, Joan Sangster, Ian McKay, Amani Whitfield, Mark Leier, Gregory Kealey, Stephen High, and Suzanne Morton.

Free and open to the public, the annual event is sponsored by the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Cape Breton University and the J.B. McLachlan Commemorative Society.
