Jenny MacLean is a Grade Primary teacher within the Cape Breton-Victoria District School Board, where she currently teaches 25 students. She recently decided to upgrade her teaching license through the Graduate Diploma Program in Curriculum Studies at CBU.
“I chose CBU because it offers a Diploma in Curriculum Studies through Distance,” says Jenny. “Being a full-time teacher, the option to take the program online through distance allows me to do it at my own time and convenience. Even if I travel for a weekend, I can log on wherever I am and complete my course assignments.”
Although the program is through distance, Jenny says that there is ample communication.
“My professors are easy to access by email or phone and they always give positive, constructive feedback on assignments,” she says. “I also have the opportunity to communicate with other teachers who are taking the course throughout the province, across Canada and even outside the country.”
Through the Graduate Diploma, Jenny has had the opportunity to conduct meaningful research that can be directly applied in the classroom.
“I’m working on a major research project focused on writing in the Grade Primary classroom, which is where I’ve taught for the bulk of my career,” she says. “I’m looking forward to this work becoming a resource for my colleagues who also teach Grade Primary.”
The process of taking the Graduate Diploma to upgrade her teaching license has been positive and thought provoking for Jenny.
“You get new ideas and perspectives that you can apply with your students,” she says. “You not only learn from your professors, but you learn from each other. I would recommend CBU as a place to do your upgrading.”
