Kori AndreaNorth Sydney native Kori Andrea is a fourth-year BSc Chemistry (Honours) here at CBU – currently working as an honours thesis student, under the supervision of Dr. Martin Mkandawire, Industrial Research Chair in Minewater Management, Verschuren Center.

This past summer Kori had the opportunity to take her research to a whole new location: Dresden, Germany.

“My project involved the synthesis and characterization of nanodiamonds for biomedical applications. Specifically we were binding these nanodiamonds onto titanium alloy material that is used in bone and dental implants. The main goal behind the project was to improve properties such as corrosion, hardness and bioactivity of the implant material.”

During the 14-weeks Kori had the opportunity to spend her first 2 weeks in Berlin, Germany for a German language course provided through her scholarship she spent a weekend in Heidelberg, Germany for a conference where she presented her research, travelled to Hamburg, Frankfurt and Leipzig within Germany. Not to mention Rome and Prague, Czech Republic.

Through the program Kori had the opportunity to meet amazing people from all over the world, experience the German language and culture first hand. Research wise, the experience she’d gained from conducting research at CBU more than prepared her for working in the German labs.

“The group I was working for were overly impressed with what skills I already had- which I think really shows the high caliber of research being done at CBU.”

Kori truly loves being in the lab. An education in Chemistry has opened so many doors for her: gaining extensive research experience, presented at scientific conferences and won awards, spent a summer in Germany on a research internship and met amazing people, both students and professors.

“There are so many opportunities for students interested in Chemistry. It is a great starting point for those interested in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy etc. we have lots of chemistry grads that’ve gone onto these programs. The department is a small close-kit group, which makes the transition from high school to university much easier. I know if I hadn’t of chosen a degree in Chemistry or went elsewhere for my degree I wouldn’t have had the research opportunities, volunteer work or exchange opportunity I had due to choosing CBU.”
