Dear Valued Partner,

Concept based learning (CBL) is an educational method that focuses on the big ideas and teaches students how to organize and categorize information. The traditional methods of learning concentrated on the ability to recall specific facts in isolation, whereas concept-based learning focuses on the understanding of broader concepts that can be applied to a variety of specific examples across the lifecycle.

Students are challenged to think more critically about the concepts and their interrelatedness to situations they encounter by applying prior knowledge and experience. Students must think beyond the facts and connect factual knowledge to ideas of conceptual significance and find relevance.

In the video below, Michael Cadegan, a CBU Nursing student, discusses a student perspective of the benefits of concept based learning.
