Property Valuation Services Corporation (PVSC) is responsible for assessing all property in Nova Scotia. The assessment information we produce is used by municipalities as a way to fairly and equitably distribute property taxes among residents.  With seven offices across Nova Scotia, we provide annual property assessments to 51 municipalities and produce approximately 600,000 notices for property owners.

Position Summary

Under the guidance of an Operations Manager or designate, the Property Data Assistant will provide valuation and administrative support by performing a range of functions through activities related to inventory review, permits, sales, project support and overall valuation process support for all types of properties (including commercial, residential, resource, exempt, etc.).  He/she will review and validate information using various imaging software and possibly field visits, record notes and observations and updates as required in the property data system (iasWorld).

Qualifications

Grade XII and enrolled in a post secondary institution (preference will be given to those enrolled in a mathematics /statistics, property assessment/appraisal field, or business/ administration/ commerce program).  The successful candidate(s) must demonstrate excellent verbal communication skills, attention to detail, ability to learn and apply computer applications, and excellent public relations  Knowledge of building construction and related terminology in order to describe and evaluate the quality of buildings and construction methods is highly desirable.

The successful candidates will also demonstrate PVSC leadership competencies of Communication, Relationship Building, Decision Making, Client & Stakeholder Partnerships, Performance Excellence, Business Acumen and Pride and Ownership.

Responsibilities

Duties

  • Prepare property files, gather and compile data, reconcile and prioritize inventory to support Assessors with an efficient and effective valuation and inspection process;
  • Conduct desk-top review using various tools and technology such as Pictometry, Property Online, MLS, maps, iasWorld system, client contact and/or field visits to verify property related information for relevance and accuracy;
  • Review property data inventory to identify and validate current property use and classification and prepare comparison reports of data spreadsheets and iasWorld system;
  • Record notes and observations and inputs data in iasWorld system as required, applying appropriate coding and construction/building/property related terminology, ensuring consistency.
