CBU COOP ONLY – NEW DAWN ENTERPRISES – COORDINATOR

Requirements

Background

In May of 2013, New Dawn Enterprises (Sydney, NS) purchased the former Holy Angels Convent and High School. The High School now serves as the New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation and the Convent is in the early stages of transition to a Centre for Arts and Culture.

For more than 130 years, the Convent and all-girls High School were administered by the Sisters of Notre Dame. In addition to offering core curriculum, the Sisters were particularly concerned with arts and culture education and in instilling a strong sense of purpose and self-esteem in students.

In part honouring this history and in part honouring the women of Cape Breton, who are often under-memorialized, particularly for their work and roles in the home and in building and maintaining local community, New Dawn is seeking to create a physical gallery of the story and images of Cape Breton women (as brought forward by their families and friends).

New Dawn is also seeking to begin to gather together, in person and online, the vast and diverse alumni of Holy Angels – to share with them the work that is being done, to strengthen and reignite their unique community and connections, and to assess the potential of this community for future fundraising endeavors around Holy Angels and its new users.

Responsibilities

To research and design a physical women’s story gallery in the repurposed Holy Angels High School (now New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation) – unveiling may coincide with aforementioned major gathering

To identify and document Holy Angels alumni (names and contact information/current address and e-mail address)

To create an in-person (Cape Breton/Nova Scotia) and online (Facebook and website) community of Holy Angels Alumni

To work with the Beaton Institute to populate a website with various archived materials relevant to Holy Angels High School and Covent

To form and lead a local alumni networking/planning committee

With the committee and independently, to research and present alumni fundraising opportunities of various scales to New Dawn’s Director of Communications, Director of Operations and New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation Facilities Manager

With the committee and independently, to plan at least one major gathering of local (Cape Breton/Nova Scotia) alumni

With the committee and independently, devise and implement strategies for growing the in-person and online community

To devise a report and recommendations on future actions needed to (a) maintain and expand gallery; (b) maintain and expand Holy Angels alumni community; and (c) to launch and expand alumni fundraising efforts
