Requirements

Parks Canada – Student employment – summer, 2016
There are various employment opportunities with Parks Canada, Cape Breton.

Employment dates range from mid- May to early September, 2016.

The Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) provides full-time students with the opportunity to:

  • Gain valuable work experience
  • Explore your interests
  • Develop your skills

 Most opportunities are 37.5 hours per week, and there is a possibility of one (1) part-time employment opportunity.

Students are not required to have previous work experience in order to apply to full-time or part-time jobs.

Locations:

  • Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site Louisbourg, Nova Scotia
  • Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, Baddeck, Nova Scotia
  • Marconi National Historic Site, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia
  • Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Ingonish and Cheticamp, Nova Scotia

What kind of jobs are there?

Student Heritage Presenter

Under the supervision of the Parks Canada Interpretation Officer Coordinator, deliver historical and cultural heritage interpretive programs, provide guided tours and roving interpretation to the visiting public and organized groups. Greet and orient visitors and respond to general inquiries. Provide information and direct visitors to sources of information. Operate Point of Sales machine (POS) and participate in the development of special programs and activities.

Student Visitor Services Attendant

Under the supervision of the Parks Canada Coordinator, operate the point of sales machine. Balance end of day accounts and floats, schedule group visits and rotations. Greet and orient visitors, and introduce/operate multimedia presentation. Respond to general inquiries and direct visitors to sources of information. May be asked to do a minimal amount of roving interpretation and participate in the development of special projects and activities.

Responsibilities

Skills:
Language: Bilingual French and English

Ability to work with the public

Knowledge of point of sale;
Ability to work with the public

Eligibility Criteria;
To be eligible, you must be:
• a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in an accredited institution
• currently recognized as having full-time student status by the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled
• returning to full-time studies in the next academic term
• the minimum age to work in the province where the job exists.

Note: Students who are in their last year of study are eligible to work part-time until the completion of their last academic term. You will be asked to provide proof that you meet these requirements.
