Job/Project Description: Curatorial assistant for CBU Zoology museum
- Assist in taking inventory and digital cataloging of museum specimens at the CBU Zoology museum. These tasks will enhance student computer data-basing skills and their familiarity with the taxonomy of zoological species.
- Research and assist in the development of protocols for museum specimen maintenance. These will aid in the protection of our museum specimens and will increase the students’ knowledge and understanding of standard museum protocols.
- The student will also be tasked with assisting in the promotion of institutional and public awareness of Cape Breton species by designing displays and promotional material featuring CBU museum specimens. These displays will be housed in designated display cases within the halls of the CBU campus.
The candidate should possess good organizational and computer skills (Microsoft Office familiarity). An interest and aptitude in visual arts and a biology background (at least at the introductory level) and desire to increase knowledge of Cape Breton species. The student should also be interested in the promotion of science through visual arts.
The student will be responsible for doing an inventory of specimens contained in our zoology museum and developing a digital catalog of these specimens. The student will also develop and implement specimen maintenance protocols. Additional responsibilities will include working with faculty to develop displays that are both artistic and educational using local species from the CBU Zoology museum.
