CBU CO-OP or ALL CBU STUDENTS – Javitech Atlantic Ltd., At-Sea Observers

Requirements

At-Sea Fisheries Observers work on board commercial fishing vessels collecting scientific data and monitoring fishing activity.  Observers are dispatched to the port of sailing and remain with the vessel for the duration of the trip to sea.

The Nova Scotian positions require proficiency in written and spoken English.  We require that you have a dependable source of transportation to travel to and from the ports of sailing.  Certification as an At-Sea Fisheries Observer requires that you have successfully completed grade 12 or equivalent, complete the training course, and pass a security clearance.

Javitech Atlantic is looking to staff 25 POSITIONS in Nova Scotia along the south coast of CAPE BRETON, east and west of HALIFAX, and the southwest portion of the province near YARMOUTH.  In addition to Nova Scotia we also deploy Observers to vessels sailing from New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and Quebec.  Observers that are willing to relocate temporarily can also be considered for work based out of those provinces.

Responsibilities

Entry level and summer term observers complete shorter deployments of several days duration to small vessels (45 to 60 foot).  Employees that wish to remain with the program on a full time basis can progress to work on larger vessels (200 feet plus) with longer trips of several weeks.  This is an excellent career path for persons wishing to gain experience for fisheries and ocean related jobs or for anyone wishing to consider this as a long term career.

Application Details

We offer competitive wages with regular increases as the Observer gains experience.  Observers are paid mileage for travel to and from the ports of sailing within the region of their deployment.  For long term employees we offer medical, dental and pension plan options.

OUR NEXT TRAINING DATES: Courses for entry level At-Sea Fisheries Observers are scheduled to begin as follows:

  • 2017 April 03 – Yarmouth, NS
  • 2017 May 01 – Halifax, NS
