Message from the Co-Chairs
Fàilte! Bienvenue! Pjila’si! Welcome!
It is our privilege to welcome you to Cape Breton for the 2013 Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) annual conference. Our legions of volunteers have worked and are working diligently to ensure that you have the best conference experience possible. We are excited to bring you to a place that Travel & Leisure magazine named the number one island destination in North America, and third in the world. We love our home, particularly the stunning landscapes, the vibrant cultures, the delicious seafood, and the friendly people; we can’t wait for you to discover them for yourselves.
We are so proud of our academic home, Cape Breton University, and our host partners, the Canadian Coast Guard College. CBU is known for its research specialties in intangible cultural heritage, environmental remediation, and sustainable happiness; and its programs in community economic development, folklore, Mi’kmaq Studies, traditional music, and biodiversity.
Our conference is inspired by the concept of sustainability and titled “learning to live, learning for life.” For us, this theme encompasses living in an economically, physically, and culturally sustainable way and integrating sustained learning throughout. We are particularly eager to show you how environmental and educational sustainability connect in CBU's Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment, one of Canada’s most sustainable university labs.
We have invited two distinguished keynote speakers: Rex Murphy, who many will know as a CBC personality known for his word-smithing and lifelong passion for teaching; and Richard Gerver, who is inspiring teachers globally with his work on educational transformation.
We’re planning a great program, filled with stimulating presentations and workshops, engaging roundtables, and exciting activities outside the program. Our banquet will be held at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre, located in the heart of Sydney, and on one of the most successful First Nation communities nationwide. Our welcome reception will be held at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion on the Sydney waterfront, famously known as the site of the “big fiddle.”
So please join us on our beautiful island. And stay awhile! And please visit the site again in late October, for more information and to register.
