Katharine McLennan Volunteer Award Winner Announced

Established in 2013, the Katharine McLennan Award recognizes exceptional contributions in areas of art, culture and historical preservation of Cape Breton Island. This year’s recipient of the Katharine McLennan award is Ronald David Caplan.

Each year, a person who exemplifies Katharine McLennan’s spirit of volunteerism is acknowledged for their volunteer efforts with this special award. Mr. Caplan’s volunteer contributions seem to have no limit; from being a member of Nova Scotia Heritage Task Force, on the Board of Trustees for the Provincial Archives of Nova Scotia, a supporter of the committee for a new library in Sydney, and his involvement in Cape Breton Books and Cape Breton’s Magazine, Mr. Caplan shows his passion for community growth and recognition of culture in everything he does.

A ceremony will take place from 2–4 pm on September 10, 2015 at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, where Mr. Caplan will be conferred his award  All are welcome to attend. RSVP is requested by contacting Sarah Nicholson at sarah.nicholson@pc.gc.ca.

“The Katharine McLennan Award came about as a result of a partnership between the Beaton Institute, Cape Breton Regional Library, Fortress Louisbourg Association and Parks Canada to tell the life story of Katharine McLennan and to bring public awareness to her contributions,” says Catherine Arseneau, director of the Beaton Institute. “Through this award, we hope to build a continuing legacy of the project and recognize those who continue to enrich Cape Breton Island’s artistic, cultural and heritage communities.”

A friend of Mr. Caplan summarized him best by saying, “Cape Breton Island is a much richer place as a result of the selfless, passionate efforts of Ronald David Caplan.”

In addition to the award ceremony, Mr. Caplan will have access to the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site to hold a fundraising event that will benefit an organization of his choice. Katharine McLennan believed in the ability of individuals to make a difference in their community.
