Shoot for the Cure - 5th Anniversary
Cape Breton University CAPERS women’s basketball team and their fans came together last Saturday in an overwhelming show of support for the Shoot for the Cure fundraiser that brought together CIS women basketball players from across Canada in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
With the CAPERS players in their pink uniforms, and many of the 1,000 fans in attendance wearing pink as well, the Sullivan Fieldhouse was united in the fight against breast cancer.
“Once again the community in Cape Breton has stepped up to support such a tremendous cause,” said Fabian McKenzie, head coach of the CAPERS women’s basketball team. “Our committee does a spectacular job each year and this year was another huge success.
“Setting a goal of raising $10,000 would seem like a daunting task, but not in Cape Breton. The people of Cape Breton are known for their generosity and they showed it again this year toppling our goal. The highlight of our Shoot for the Cure event each year is our survivor walk where Cape Breton Breast Cancer survivors walk around our court. These women have shown true courage in the face of adversity and are true heroes in our community.”
At half time, there was a Survivor’s Lap for local breast cancer survivors with more than 25 courageous ladies taking part.

Shoot for the CureT-shirts were sold during the game, along with pizza, baked goods and tickets on gift baskets with a total of $10,358.39 being raised for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Cancer Unit. In the five years since the event’s inauguration, the CAPERS women’s basketball team and CBU Alumni have raised more than $50,000 for this important cause
