Mr. Stephen Augustine Appointed Principal of Unama’ki College

It is my pleasure to congratulate Mr. Stephen Augustine on his appointment as Principal of Unama’ki College.  Stephen has been actively engaged nationally in research and traditional knowledge with many organizations, including federal and provincial governments, the Assembly of First Nations and various Aboriginal communities across Canada.  He has long been a supporter of educational opportunities for Aboriginal Peoples, has taught at Carleton University, has been a guest speaker at national and international conferences, has organized cross-cultural workshops, published papers, and participated widely in broadcasts on indigenous knowledge and culture.  He has also been the recipient of several cultural and heritage awards and comes to us from his most recent position as Curator of Ethnology for Eastern Maritimes at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.  Stephen is Hereditary Chief, Sigenigtog District Mi’kmawey Mawiomi and Keptin on the Mi’kmaq Grand Council and, by Elder’s training from an early age, has a thorough command of traditional practices, his language, and the history of his people.

I hope you will join me in welcoming him to the CBU community.  We look forward to his leadership with Unama’ki College when he assumes his new role in our academic community on January 7, 2013.
