Cape Breton University offers congratulations to Joe Shannon, President, Atlantic Corporation Limited and Chair of the Shannon School of Business Advisory Board, on his up-coming induction to the Canadian Business Hall of Fame slated for May 1, 2013. In issuing the announcement of its four inductees, the CBHA notes that “Each year the Canadian Business Hall of Fame recognizes and celebrates the lifetime accomplishments of Canada’s business leaders in light of their business excellence and enduring contributions to Canadian society.”
The CBHF was established by Junior Achievement of Canada in 1979. Companions are nominated by their peers and are chosen by an independent selection committee representing Canada’s foremost business, academic and media institutions. As companions, these individuals become mentors and role models for Junior Achievement Youth and Canada’s future business leaders.
While Mr. Shannon leads many business entities and sits on a number of significant boards, he has been a loyal and longstanding supporter of, and fundraising leader for, Cape Breton University. Under his leadership, the Future First Campaign raised more than $15 m in Scholarship funds for CBU students. Following that, he undertook a second campaign to raise $12 m for the recently opened Shannon School of Business building, named in honor of his family. Currently, he is completing a fundraising initiative for the SSOB Purdy Crawford Chair in Aboriginal Business Studies. Mr. Shannon is also Chair of the SSOB Advisory Board, comprised of an outstanding group of nationally established business men and women.
On a number of occasions, Mr. Shannon has spoken with great passion about his belief in the power of education and the tremendous capacity he sees in Cape Breton University students. CBU is proud to call him a friend of this university and offer him both our thanks and well wishes on this outstanding and well deserved accolade.
Joining Mr. Shannon as a 2013 inductee is Peter Gilgan, Founder and CEO, Mattamy Homes; Ian Greenbery, President and CEO, Astral; and David Mirvish, President, Ed Mirvish Corporation.
