Cape Breton University is hosting its annual Cultural Evening of Food and Wine on Thursday, March 31 at 7 p.m. Presented by the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, the evening will offer tastings of wine and a delicious selection of hor d’oeuvres from six different countries. The evening is a part of the Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management curriculum and provides students who are studying in the program with exposure to the many details involved in planning an event.
About forty students, from several countries including China, Canada and Sweden, have contributed to the evening and in various capacities – planning, marketing, food & beverage, finance and logistics. “The students are completely responsible for every aspect of planning, promoting, implementing and evaluating the event,” say Professor Brendan MacDonald, Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. “They have done everything from conceiving the theme to planning and costing the menus to choosing the wines, and they will prepare the food, decorate the facility and serve during the event.”
This year, the wines have been selected from South Africa, France, Italy, Canada, Chile and Australia and will be complemented by a selection of food that is sure to excite the palate. To add to the atmosphere, Elizabeth Patterson and David Burke will entertain guests as they mingle throughout the evening.
MacDonald notes “this is the sixth year for the event, which has been exceptionally well received in the past. Our students have invested a lot of time into this project, carefully selecting and pairing the wine and food. I expect this year will meet and surpass last year’s success.’”
