Cape Breton University’s Boardmore Playhouse will officially open the 44 Season of Plays with Captain John Smith Goes to Ukraine by the Yara Arts Group of New York. Created and Performed by Bob Holman, Susan Hwang and Julian Kytasty, the one-time showing will take place at the Boardmore Theatre on October 11, 2014 at 2 p.m.
Conceived and directed by VirlanaTkacz, this epic journey is a comedy/musical/historical experience that tells the story of a time shortly before Capt. John Smith first sailed for Virginia, when he was an adventurer in the Mediterranean where he fought the Ottoman Turks and was captured and sold as a slave.
“Captain John Smith Goes to Ukraine is based on Smith’s own writing about his adventures fighting in the Turkish wars in Eastern Europe before he came to America,” explains Todd Hiscock, Director of the Boardmore Playhouse. “The music includes traditional Ukrainian epic songs known as “dumas” and wild new songs written by Susan Hwang which she performs accompanying herself on the accordion, as well as over the top love poetry by Bob Holman.”
