Beaton Institute Accepting Applications for Grant in Aid Program

The Beaton Institute, in partnership with the Cape Breton University Press, is accepting applications to the Robert J. Morgan Grant-in-Aid Program.

This award is intended to assist researchers of Cape Breton related themes reach a broader audience through a publication by CBU Press.During his life Dr. Morgan made an outstanding contribution to the archival community, the heritage sector and the scholarly field of local history, particularly the history of Cape Breton Island. Bob served as director of the Beaton Institute from 1976 until his retirement from Cape Breton University in 2001.

“The Beaton Institute is pleased to honour Dr. Morgan’s memory and bequest through this Grant-in-Aid,” says Catherine Arseneau, manager of the Beaton Institute. “Bob was a great supporter of the wonderful research being accomplished in and about Cape Breton history. As a published author of local history himself, I feel Bob would appreciate the support this grant is giving new and emerging authors.”

The grants are intended to provide encouragement, not sole support, for research which will be ready for publication in a timely fashion through CBU Press. Funds may be applied to project related expenses such as travel, manuscript preparations (editorial services, scanning of image and documents, indexing), translation services, rights and permissions in preparation for publication. Other costs directly associated with the project, including a stipend for the proponent will be considered where deemed appropriate.

The Grant-in-Aid Program operates on a limited budget, and tries to assist as many individuals and institutions as possible within these limited resources. Applications to a maximum of $5000 will be considered and grants may vary in amount on a year to year basis. Applications must be submitted or postmarked by June 13, 2014. Recipients will be announced by July 15th, 2014.
