11:30 a.m.- 1 p.m.
Learn the art of konnakol (South Indian vocal percussion) and how it is used in Bharatanatyam (South Indian classical dance). In this unique workshop, Bharatanatyam dancer Meera Varghese will lead students through the fundamentals of the Carnatic Tala system including recitation of rhythmic syllables and traditional clapping patterns of different rhythm cycles. Intricate rhythmic compositions will then be translated to dance through the combination of dynamic footwork and expressive mudras (hand gestures). Students will learn a basic choreography combining both rhythmic and storytelling aspects of Bharatanatyam, while also learning to accompany the dance sequence with vocal percussion. Suitable for beginners – no previous dance experience required
