The CBU Art Gallery will host its sixth annual community based art show Proletariart beginning on February 3rd running until April 13th. This year will mark the 21st anniversary of the art gallery’s efforts to display artwork created by students, faculty, and staff. In 2012 the gallery opened up the exhibition to the participation of the broader Cape Breton community. Alongside Proletariart 2017 the gallery will host an additional exhibition of tintype photographs by Karen Stentaford. In September 2016 during the Lumière festival Stentaford set up a tintype studio on Charlotte Street in downtown Sydney. Festival goers were invited to sit and have their 19th century style portrait captured. Thanks to the generosity of the Lumière team the gallery is able to share the results of this unique project with gallery visitors.
The opening reception for both ProletariART 2017 and Karen Stentaford’s Photomatic Travelling Tintype Studio takes place in the CBU art gallery from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Friday, February 3rd. For more information on either exhibition please visit our upcoming exhibitions page.
