Dr. Felix Odartey-Wellington

Dr. Felix Odartey-Wellington is an Associate Professor of Communication. He joined CBU after an extensive career as a lawyer and broadcaster in Ghana, and graduate studies in Communication at Concordia University and Toronto Metropolitan University. Outside the classroom, he is a Public Affairs Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve, communicating for the Canadian military in Atlantic Canada and abroad.

Sarah MacRae is a Senior Lab Instructor in the Department of Communication and Languages at Cape Breton University, owner of SMR Communication, creator and co-host of The Morning Meeting with Sarah and Jess Podcast, and ‘Mom’ to Beau, Brooks & Grady. Instructing in the areas of interpersonal communication, public speaking, and media studies; Sarah focuses on the intersection of communication, connection, and community, and how the three contribute to transformative learning.

She recently contributed a chapter titled ‘Interpersonal communication: A critical reflection tool’ in the forthcoming book, Women and Leadership in Distance Education in Canada. She is particularly passionate about inclusive language, gendered & mediated communication, and discussing the impact and influence our language has on the personal and professional climates we create and contribute to.

Nina Kent

Nina Kent is an Anishinaabe woman from the Treaty 3 territory, Washagamis Bay First Nation, Ontario. She moved to Cape Breton to finish her education at Cape Breton University (CBU) and planned to move back to Ontario after completing her education. Her love for the Island, meaningful employment and meeting her life partner helped her make the easy decision to stay and set a foundation for her life on Cape Breton Island.

After graduating from CBU’s MBA Community Economic Development (CED) in fall of 2017, Nina started working at CBU managing In.Business: A Mentorship program for Indigenous Youth as the General Manager. In 2022, Nina accepted the position of Director of Business Operations, Unama’ki College.

Nina is very culturally involved as a jingle dress dancer, artist and mother of two small children. Her use of culture and identity has inspired Nina to incorporate her culture into all aspects of her work.

Mattea Roach

Mattea Roach (they/she) is a writer and podcaster whose work engages with Canadian politics and media criticism. She is best known for her appearances on the game show Jeopardy!, which included a 23 game winning streak in the spring of 2022 and a second place finish in the inaugural Jeopardy! Masters competition in May of this year. Born in Halifax and currently living in Toronto, Mattea has a strong connection with Cape Breton through both sides of her family tree.
