Field trip options offer an exciting blend of both half day and full day options, ranging in activity, level of physical difficulty and price. The choice is yours how you spend a wonderful day outdoors on Unama’ki/Cape Breton Island.

  1. Sea Kayaking in North River

Half-day field trip, includes: 3-hour guided paddle, a lobster boil mid-paddle, all equipment and transportation. Minimum 6 participants, maximum of 12.

  1. Bird Island Boat Tour (out of Big Bras d’Or)

Half-day field trip, includes: 3-hour boat tour to Bird Island with ample opportunities to see puffins, eagles and seals. Price includes all transportation. Maximum 30 participants.

  1. Sailing on the Bras d’Or Lakes

Half-day field trip, includes: 2-hour sailing trip on the world famous Bra d’Or Lakes, see Alexander Graham Bell’s mansion. Price includes all transportation. Maximum 40 participants.

  1. Big Canoe in Louisbourg Harbour

Half-day field trip, includes: 3-hour paddle along the SE coast of Cape Breton. Price includes all equipment and transportation. Maximum 14 participants, with tours available in the morning and afternoon.

  1. Mi’kmaq Cultural Experience

  1. Coal Town Tour

Full-day field trip, includes: joining Glace Bay native Wayne McKay on the transit bus for a trip to one of Cape Breton’s former coal mining towns.  On our tour of Glace Bay, we will travel through some of the old mining neighbourhoods and walk to the Cape Breton Miners Museum where we will take a tour of an underground coal mine.  We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant.  If weather permits, we may have a pit stop at Dominion Beach for a dip in the Atlantic Ocean.

  1. Surfing at Point Michaud Beach

Full-day field trip, includes: 2 hours of surfing instruction (as needed), all equipment and transportation. Point Michaud is a lifeguarded beach and with its shallow sandy ocean bottom it is one of the best spots to learn to surf in Nova Scotia. Maximum 24 participants.

  1. Hiking History in Louisbourg

Full-day field trip, includes: a guided tour of the Fortress of Louisbourg, the largest historical reconstruction in North America, and a hike to the site of the first Lighthouse in Canada (1734) across the harbor from the Fortress. Price includes all transportation.
