Housing Information for 2023 Spring/Summer Semesters

As we prepare to welcome you to Cape Breton University for the 2023 spring and/or summer semesters, below you will find important information as it relates to housing and accommodations in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM). We must stress to students who are moving to the CBRM the importance of securing housing and other accommodations before arriving in Cape Breton. Housing is extremely limited at this time so starting your search early is important.

Student success is our number one priority. Securing housing plays a vital role in your student experience and it’s important that students do not travel to Canada, or to Sydney, before securing proper accommodations. To make an informed decision, please make note of the following:

  • Secure your accommodations in advance. It is dangerous and irresponsible to travel anywhere without planning your accommodations in advance. We encourage budgeting at least $800-$1,000 per month for housing and related expenses.
  • Airport pick-up will be available from April 21-29, 2023. Please keep an eye on your CBU student email and CBU social media channels for when the registration form is available.
  • On-campus housing is available and strongly recommended. Living in residence is a big part of the university experience and will provide the foundation for so many of the memories you make at CBU! Click here to learn more and to apply now. Note, move-in day for on-campus housing is April 29-30, 2023. We cannot accommodate an early move-in day, so if students living in residence arrive in Sydney prior to the move-in date, they will need to arrange other accommodations.
  • Off-campus housing is extremely limited. However, CBU has an off-campus listings page that is updated as soon as new listings become available. We strongly encourage students to use this page as it is a trusted source.
  • Be cautious! If you find an off-campus location that is suitable to your needs, please use caution when transferring funds for deposits to landlords and ensure it is a legitimate rental. Review your rights as a tenant in Nova Scotia by visiting the Nova Scotia Residential Tenancies Act

We continue to advocate for affordable housing solutions within the CBRM. Please continue to use the housing resources highlighted above to assist you with your accommodation search.

We can’t wait to welcome you to CBU this spring!

Sincerely,

John Mayich, Director of Student Affairs
