Verify you have all needed documents:
-
any visa(s) required to enter the country, and/or to work
-
copies of credit card account numbers, including the 1-800 number to call in the event of loss or theft
-
your AXA travel insurance card
-
airline and hotel confirmations
-
passport and driver’s license
-
travel itinerary
-
tickets
-
contact information for the closest Canadian embassy in your country of destination
-
make copies of necessary documents such as passport, credit card account numbers, your AXA travel insurance card, airline and hotel confirmations:
-
photocopies can be left at home with a relative or friend, or carry the documents separately from the originals
-
e-mail the information to yourself to an address that you can access from any computer (e.g. hotmail or yahoo account) at an internet cafe or hotel (use some form of code for the information for security purposes)
-
scan and store on a portable USB drive and keep it on your person
-
carry an additional passport photograph with you. In the event your passport is stolen or lost, it may be difficult to obtain a replacement in your location.
-
check the expiry dates on all documents to ensure they are valid for your entire period of travel (for example, your passport or driver’s license). It is recommended that your passport not expire for at least two (2) months after your anticipated return date.
-
give your credit card company advance notice of your travels to avoid them cutting off access due to overseas fraud scams
-
have a back up credit card for emergencies
-
verify that you will be able to access your account from ATMs at your destination. You may wish to set up a special account for this purpose.
-
carry all medications in their original bottles. Consider carrying a copy of your prescription with you (including the generic name) in the event you need to fill it in a foreign country
-
prepare a “first aid” kit suitable to your travel purpose and location, for example, anti-malaria pills, antibiotic creams, bandages, antiseptic, etc.
Cell phone/computer usage:
-
find out if there are any special codes that are needed to use your cell phone for long distance calls from the country of destination.
-
verify the power voltage in your country of destination. Obtain a converter, if required, for any electrical device you will be using.
-
Use of your CBU cell phone during international travel can be very expensive with roaming charges accumulating constantly. Cell phones should only be powered on when necessary. Depending on the country and the time of year, a short-term voice / data package may be available to lessen the costs. Please contact IT Services at least two weeks prior to departure. They will work with Bell Mobility to reduce your costs.
-
If you are travelling with any electronic device (laptop, note pad, smart phone, etc.) which might contain confidential CBU information, you should take special care to protect this information. The device may have some security features, such as encryption, which may be enabled. If you are unsure, contact IT Services for assistance.
-
Under PIPEDA legislation, we are required to submit an annual report of international travel by CBU employees, including countries, reason for travel and use of wireless devices.
