Students majoring in history must consult annually with the department chair before choosing their courses for the coming year.
General Regulations
- Students may not take both History 100 and Humanities Core 101 and 103 for credit. History 100 is recommended for intending majors.
- Students wishing to take courses at the 300 level must have completed at least 12 credits in History (including and six credits in Humanities, Philosophy or Religious Studies). Those wishing to take courses at the 400 level must have completed at least 18 credits in History, with at least 6 at the 300 level.
3-year Year General Degree
Students are required to take History 100 or Humanities Core; 12 credits in North American and 12 credits in European/British, including 6 in each area at the 200 level and 6 at the 300 level; and an additional 6 credits at the 300 level or above.

4-year Major Degree
- All Programs: History 100 or any six credits in Humanities, Philosophy or Religious Studies; 12 credits in North American and 12 credits in European/British, including 6 in each area at the 200 level and 6 at the 300 level.
- Major with Minor: 18 additional credits, 12 of which at the 300 or 400 level, including 6 at the 400 level. Also, History 492.

Double Major (History as first subject): 12 additional credits, including 6 at the 400 level. Also, History 492.
- Area Major: History 492 (unless a comparable course is offered in another subject).
