Cape Breton University offers a 16 month Bachelor of Education Program with the option of taking one of three streams:

  • Elementary stream
  • Intermediate/secondary stream
  • Aboriginal stream

Upon graduation students will be eligible to apply for Teaching Certification in Nova Scotia.  Classes begin each spring. 

Bachelor of Education Program Requirements
Elementary Education (P-6) Requirements:
Candidates for the Bachelor of Education (Elementary) must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree from a recognized University, with a minimum of 90 credit hours and the following:

  • Social Studies: Nine credits in university social studies from among History (with a preference for local and Canadian History), Geography, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Law, Classics, African Canadian Studies, Mi’kmaq Studies, Acadian Studies and/or Philosophy
  • Science: Six credits in university science coursework from any one or combination of the following disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology/Earth Sciences, Oceanography and Environmental Studies
  • Mathematics: Three credits in university Mathematics coursework with a preference for a course in fundamental concepts
  • English: Six credits in university English coursework
  • Developmental Psychology: Six credits in university Developmental Psychology coursework.

Intermediate/Secondary Education (7-12) Requirements:

Candidates for the Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Secondary) must have successfully completed a university degree and the following:
First Teachable Area: A concentration of at least thirty credit hours of university coursework in a single discipline selected from below.
Second Teachable Area: A concentration of at least eighteen credit hours of university coursework in a second single discipline university coursework in a single discipline selected from below.
Additional Requirements (Secondary Education): If not included in the first and second teachable areas, students must also possess the following course work: 

  • Social Studies: Six credit hours in university social studies coursework from any one or combination of the following disciplines - Canadian Studies, History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Law, Classics, African Canadian Studies, Mi'kmaq Studies, Acadian Studies, Celtic Studies and/ or Philosophy.
  • Mathematics or Science: Three credit hours of university coursework from among Mathematics, Science (excluding Psychology), or Computer Studies.
  • English: Three credit hours of university coursework in English 

Intermediate/Secondary Teachables: English, Math, French, Fine Arts, Technology, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology/Earth Sciences, Oceanography or Environmental Studies) and Social Studies (History, Geography, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, African Canadian Studies, or Mi’kmaq Studies).  (Please note that Anthropology can be used as a second teachable area only.)
Preference will be given to students who possess at least one teachable discipline which aligns to shortage areas designated by the Nova Scotia Department of Education. These shortage areas include:

  • French
  • Mathematics
  • Fine Arts (Visual Arts, Drama, Theatre Arts Music or Dance)
  • Technology
  • Physics

A student in good academic standing, who has achieved an average of at least 65% throughout their undergraduate degree, and an average of at least 70% in the last 60 credits attempted, is eligible for admission into the program.

Master of Education (Information Technology)

The graduate program in Information Technology is offered in partnership with Memorial University Newfoundland (MUN) online. It is designed to facilitate the educational use of information technology in a wide variety of settings. The program will be of interest to educators at all levels including K-12 teachers, school administrators, those in the post-secondary system, business and industry, as well as those in most other adult learning situations.
(Students applying to this program must do so through MUN)
Information technology in this Master of Education program includes computer, communications, networking and multi-media applications. The overall intent of the program is to:

  • Provide educators with skill sets and pedagogical expertise that will enable them to address computer and related information technology in a teaching/learning situation
  • Develop potential information technology leaders for the educational system
  • Develop instructional designers, for a variety of educational settings, who are able to combine information technology with learning theory to enhance curriculum development and delivery
  • Provide a basis for the continued professional development of educators in the area of information technology
  • Develop an awareness of the applications of information technology in a wide variety of educational contexts
  • Develop research expertise and potential in the use and application of information technology for teaching and learning purposes.

Candidates for the program will have attained, prior to acceptance, some fundamental knowledge and skills with respect to information technology through prerequisite experiences, and have attained a recognised undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline with at least a second class standing. The program components are designed to enable candidates to build on their prior experience through the development of pedagogical links and information technology applications. It is intended that the program be offered primarily as a part-time program through online courses, with other delivery formats to be considered/utilised where feasible. Access to specific computer hardware, software, and the internet is required and will be the responsibility of each candidate.
