Core and discipline specific competency projects in Canada now define skill sets required of public health professionals. The scope of practice in environmental public health has morphed from that of technician to educator, needs assessor, advocate, collaborator, planner, investigator and advisor.

CBU’s Public Health program is one of only five in the country accredited by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors and graduates are academically eligible to sit for the national certification examinations leading to the credential Certified Public Health Inspector (Canada).  Over the last number of years, many students in the program have received excellent job offers in their field prior to graduation and it is expected that the demand for public health services in Canada will continue to grow.

    Public sector careers as:

  • Public Health Inspectors
  • Environmental Health Officers
  • Food Safety Specialists, and
  • Occupational Health & Safety Officers.

The private sector also employs graduates as Environmental Health consultants in areas such as water & food quality, pest control, risk assessment, and indoor air quality.

Recent events such as the Westray Mine disaster, the Walkerton water tragedy, bioterrorism threats, SARS and H1N1 have generated new demands for Environmental Public Health expertise. It is anticipated that employment opportunities for graduates with the Bachelor of Technology (Public Health) degree will be significantly higher than average for some time into the future.

The demand for increased capacity and advanced education of practitioners in Public Health has seen access to post-graduate programs increase sharply. More and more CBU Public Health graduates are furthering their education by enrolling in these post-graduate programs.
