Program Options

  • 4 year Program
  • 2 year Accelerated Post Diploma/Degree Format
  • 1 year Professional Degree Completion Format

Four Year Option

The four-year program is available to secondary school graduates and is composed of 40 term courses. Upon completion of this program, students are academically eligible to apply to take the national certification examinations leading to the credential Certified Public Health Inspector (Canada) CPHI(C). An appropriate 12-week practicum is also a requirement for certification. Compliance with CIPHI practicum criteria and other certification requirements is a student responsibility and does not lie with CBU. The four year option cannot be completed by online education.

Two Year Option

CBU offers a two year program for graduates with a relevant Bachelor’s Degree or Technology Program. The first year of a joint two year post-diploma program is also offered en français in partnership with the Bathurst campus of the New Brunswick Community College. This option cannot be completed by online education.

Upon completion of the program, students are academically eligible to apply to take the national certification exam of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. An appropriate twelve-week practicum is also a requirement for certification. Compliance with Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors practicum criteria is a student responsibility and does not lie with Cape Breton University.

One Year In-career/Online Option

This option is open only to those students who hold the credential Certified Public Health Inspector (Canada), CPHI(C). Certified inspectors are eligible to receive the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) degree upon completion of the equivalent of one year full-time study, which, in Public Health, is a minimum of twelve three-credit courses. It may be completed part-time via online education over two years.

While students following other learning pathways may be admitted into these courses, proof of certification is required before the degree can be conferred. Online offerings are developed for the one-year in-career option for students who are practicing Public Health professionals, and the approach is significantly different from the face-to-face version. These courses generally are not open to on-campus students: in rare circumstances, on-campus students may be admitted to the online version and only with prior permission of the instructor.

See Online Education Course Schedule.
