Administrative Offices

The administrative offices of Cape Breton University provide a support structure that enables the effective and efficient delivery of programs and services to students. These support services range from finance and account billing to internal and external communication, human resources and a wide range of other responsibilities. The information below provides an overview to the services these offices provide and a direct link to senior administrative team members.

President's Office

The President's Office oversees much of the administrative work that goes into running Cape Breton University. The President and Vice-Chancellor, is the Chief Executive Officer of Cape Breton University and he provides leadership for all academic, administrative, financial, and physical programs, in keeping with the University's mandate. He's also responsible for implementing all policies approved by the Board of Governors, as well as other pertinent legislation and regulations. The President also represents Cape Breton University to governments, academic agencies and other organizations.

Reporting to the President, the Vice President, Finance & Administration is responsible for all non-academic operations of the University. Working in cooperation with Senior Management Group members, the Vice-President provides leadership on administrative and financial matters of concern to the University. The Vice-President, in the capacity of treasurer of the institution, serves as a member of the University's Board of Governors.

The Vice-President (Academic) provides the senior academic leadership for Cape Breton University faculty and staff, including the development and delivery of innovative academic programming, strategic planning and enrolment management. Reporting to the President, the Vice-President ensures the highest quality educational experience is available for students by working with the Deans who are the administrators in promoting the highest standards of excellence in teaching and research. In addition, this key position serves as the Chief Academic Representative to government, external agencies, consortia and partnerships providing the academic voice of Cape Breton University. The Vice-President (Academic) serves as an ex officio member of the University's Board of Governors and currently holds the position of Secretary of the Board.

Facilities Management

The Facilities Management department is responsible for the physical plant maintenance of campus. This includes overseeing major renovation projects and campus expansion projects to ensuring housekeeping, grounds work and maintenance are carried out on a regular basis throughout campus. This office oversees the many sub-contracted project teams associated with its function as well as management of the Canada Games Complex, campus residences, food services and conference services also flow through this department.

Research & Graduate Studies

The Research and Development function at Cape Breton University, as at other Canadian universities, has evolved over the years. This campus function oversees academic research through granting council and other funding sources and the development of many academic institutes reflecting the research interests of our faculty.

The area of Research & Graduate Studies encourages development of activities and facilities which will stimulate research activities within Cape Breton University. The mandate of this area includes responsibility to assist faculty and administrators in obtaining research and development project funding; provide a liaison with granting agencies, foundations, other funders and other learning institutions; ensure the administration of research funding and internal and external policies affecting research activities; ensure the ethical conduct of both faculty and student research and raise the profile of research both internally and externally.

Human Resources

The Human Resources department oversees the recruitment and management of Cape Breton University faculty and staff. In addition to helping the University set policies and procedures, this office maintains good working relationships with respective unions, managers and other employee groups. This department also oversees the functions of Occupational Health & Safety.

Finance Office

The Finance Office is responsible for a wide range of financial services for all components of Cape Breton University's operation. The office receives all payments of tuition fees and maintains student accounts. This office also oversees the day-to-day operations of Cape Breton University with respect to accounts receivable and payable.

External

The External Department coordinates Cape Breton University's institutional development including communications, alumni and donor relations, public sector funding programs as well as international partnerships. It includes the divisions of:

Public Relations & Communications communicates the research, education and training activities and operations of Cape Breton University to internal and external audiences through news releases, features, web site, the alumni magazine Distinction, brochures and special reports. With a current student base of close to 3,600 and a growing national and international focus, Public Relations & Communications highlights information on areas such as student success, Cape Breton University initiatives in growing sectors like Aboriginal Science, IT and petroleum, opportunities and partnerships. The office also coordinated media relations.

Fundraising & Alumni Affairs also fall under Development and focuses on the cultivation of relationships with individuals, foundations and corporations. Fundraising, donor recognition, and stewardship are supported through development initiatives. The University is currently embarked on a scholarship/bursary endowment campaign.

Student Service Centre

If the library is the heart of a university, then the Student Service Centre is its front door! Combining the functions of Registrar and Student Services, this newest Cape Breton University department oversees everything from admissions and registration, student transcripts, student financial aid, scholarships and awards, and acts as the administrative liaison for the Students' Union.

This office also handles student requests for transferring course accreditations (transcripts) to other institutions, keeps a record of all the courses students have completed at Cape Breton University and posts examination schedules. This office also provides course calendars and timetables, the forms students need to register for courses and guidelines to help students keep track of your program requirements. The Student Service Centre organizes annual Orientation activities each fall and Convocation exercises each spring.

Computer Services

At CBU, the Computer Services Department provides technology support to faculty, staff and students. From networking through educational support, academic and administrative computing, Computer Services endeavours to provide the best possible support. All classrooms have been equipped with smart technologies. Wireless Internet access is now available campus wide. The campus network connects all areas to the CBU Data Center.
